In the early morning hours of Monday, September 7, 1992, Rhonda Anette Knutson
was murdered while working the 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM shift at the Phillips 66
convenience store in Chickasaw County. The store was located six miles south of
New Hampton on U.S. Highway 63 and one-quarter mile north of the junction of
highways 63, #18 and #346. The store was open 24 hours a day, but no longer
exists due to road construction.
It was determined that the probable
cause of death was to have been from severe traumatic head injuries from a
beating with a blunt object. The investigation included hundreds of interviews
by deputies and agents from the Iowa division of criminal investigation along
with the employment of a private investigator and several psychics.
The
crime remains unsolved and the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office continues to
ask for assistance for any information related to this murder.
