How do I get a copy of a mortgage?
If you provide the name of the mortgagor, date of mortgage, and/or legal description or address we can look up the mortgage for you. The information can be faxed to you for a nominal fee. Your bill will be the cover page of your fax.

Can you do a mortgage search?
Yes, but we need the mortgagor’s name and the legal description. You can come into our office and use terminals provided for public use. We will be glad to show you how to use our system. This information can be faxed to you for a nominal fee. Your bill will be the cover page of your fax.

We will not certify searches. Our records are open for public inspection.

Can you read the legal description to me?
Yes, but it is very time consuming. We prefer to fax the information for a nominal fee. Your bill will be the cover page of your fax.

Where and how can I get a copy of a birth certificate?
If you were born in Chickasaw County, you can obtain a certified copy of your birth certificate from the Recorder’s Office at the courthouse. If you were born in another county in Iowa, you will have to go through the county where you were born or contact the State Vital Records Office in Des Moines, Iowa

The Recorder’s Office does not keep records of births between the years of 1921 thru 1941, single parent births prior to July 1, 1995 or birth records of adopted children. For these records, contact the State Vital Records Office in Des Moines, Iowa.

To obtain a birth certificate, you must make application in writing or in person. You must prove entitlement to record and provide the child’s name, date of birth, father’s name and mother’s maiden name. Entitled persons include the person named on the birth certificate who is of legal age, spouse, children, legal parents, grandparents or legal representative or guardian. Requests from legal representatives or guardians must be on their business letterhead. There is a $15.00 fee for each certified copy.

Requests by mail must include payment, a copy of your photo i.d., and the required information. Mail to:

Where and how can I get a copy of a death certificate?
Only the death records of persons who died in Chickasaw County or resided in Chickasaw County and died in Iowa, are available from the Chickasaw County Recorder’s Office. To obtain a death certificate, you must make application in writing or in person. You must prove entitlement and provide the deceased’s name and date of death. Entitled persons include spouse, children, legal parents, grandparents or legal representative of guardian. Requests from legal representatives or guardians must be on their letterhead. There is a $15.00 fee for each certified copy.

The Recorder’s Office does not keep records of deaths between the years of 1921 thru 1941. For these records, contact the State Vital Records Office in Des Moines, Iowa.

If you applied for a marriage license in Chickasaw County, you can obtain a copy from the Chickasaw County Recorder’s Office even if you were married in another county in Iowa. To obtain a marriage certificate, you must make application in writing or in person. You must prove entitlement to record and provide groom’s name, bride’s name before marriage and the date of the marriage. Entitled person include the persons named on the marriage certificate, children, legal parents, grandparents, or legal representative or guardian. Requests from legal representatives or guardians must be on their letterhead. There is a $15.00 fee for each certified copy.

What do I have to do to get married? Do I have to have a blood test?
A marriage license is required in the State of Iowa. To apply, the bride, groom and a witness must each be at least 18 years of age and show a photo identification (e.g., a driver’s license). You may also pick up an application from the Recorder’s Office and fill it out, having the bride, groom and their witness sign in front of a notary. There is a three working day waiting period from the date of application before the bride or groom may pick up the marriage license. You may also have the marriage license mailed to the bride or groom after the three working date waiting period. There is non-refundable application fee of $35.00.

A certified copy of the marriage certificate will be mailed to the bride and groom after the couple is married and the Recorder’s Office receives the certificate from the officiant.

No, a blood test is not required.

Are divorce records kept in the Recorder’s Office?
No, those records are at the Clerk of the District Court’s Office. They may be contacted Monday thru Friday between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM at 641-394-2106.

If I was born in another county or state can I get my birth certificate in Chickasaw County?
No, if you were born in another county in Iowa, you must apply at the Recorder’s Office in that county or contact the Iowa Department of Public Health in Des Moines, Iowa.

If you were born in another state, you must contact the state of birth to obtain your birth record. We have a listing of contact information for other states.

Where do I get a passport?
The Recorder’s Office is a processing agent for Passport Services. You may pick up an application or fill one out at the Recorder’s Office. You will need to bring a photo identification (e.g., driver’s license), two recent photos that meet passport requirements and a certified copy of your birth certificate. If you have had a passport before, a copy of your birth certificate is not required, but bring your old passport with you. Your old passport, copy of birth certificate will be returned along with you new passport. We recommend that you have you photo taken by someone who is familiar with passport photo requirements. If your photo does not meet passport requirements, we can not accept it.

The fee is $75.00 if 16 years old or older, or $60.00 if 15 years or younger. If the applicant is under 16 years old, both parents must appear. In addition, there is a $25.00 processing fee per passport. If you need a passport earlier than the six week time frame, you will need to expedite your application at an additional cost. The expedite fee is $60.00 plus the courier fee to send your application to passport services by overnight courier.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE YOUR CHECK OUT IN ADVANCE AS PROCESSING FEE AND PASSPORT FEE ARE SEPARATE.

What are the dates for boat, snowmobile and ATV registrations? Do I need a current registration and or title to transfer?
Boat registrations are due every three years and can be renewed from January 1st thru April 30th. There is a $5.00 penalty after April 30th.

Snowmobiles and ATV registrations are due every year and can be renewed from September 1st thru December 31st. There is a $5.00 penalty after December 31st . Registrations are due by December 31st every year.

You need a signed registration (if available), bill of sale, and title, if applicable, for proper transfer.

When can new hunting and fishing licenses be purchased and what are the prices?
New hunting and fishing licenses are available on December 15th for the following calendar year. Current licenses are valid until January 10th.

If I’m 65 do I need a habitat stamp for fishing and hunting?
You do not need a habitat stamp for either if you are at least 65 years of age.

Where do I apply for homestead/military tax credit?
Chickasaw County Assessor’s Office, courthouse, 2nd floor, 641-394-2813.

Where do I find Articles of Incorporation for businesses?
You would find these at the Secretary of State’s Office. You may do an online inquiry at:
